Navigating the Global Village

In the global village of the 21st century, it takes sophisticated skills to navigate through the diversity all around us. From business to politics to entertainment, our world is increasingly filtered through a multicultural lens.

Against this backdrop, the bagels & cream cheese/neurotic New Yorker/White Man representation of the Jewish people is not only inaccurate but is also out of touch with current events. For Jewish concerns to have contemporary relevance, we must engage them with respect to our community's global experience.

Whether listening to Iraqi Jewish perspectives on the current Middle East crisis or celebrating Ethiopian Jewish heritage during Black History month, expanding our vision of Jewish identity roots us in our past and revitalizes our future.

Overcoming Educational Obstacles

Most American Jews, however, have little or no exposure to Jewish life outside the Central and Eastern European model. As a result, while we have been among the leaders of diversity work outside the Jewish people, most of us have yet to recognize and capitalize on the multiculturalism within our own community.

Tapestry provides the tools necessary for community leaders to shift from a limited European Jewish paradigm to one that reflects the racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the global Jewish experience. Through this service, the company provides innovative strategies for attracting unaffiliated Jews of all ethnicities and building bridges with non-Jewish communities of color.

Pioneering the Way

Tapestry director Loolwa Khazzoom pioneered the Jewish Multiculturalism movement in 1990, through ground-breaking work throughout North America and Israel. Her work radically transformed thinking about diversity and Jewish identity, inspiring the proliferation of community programs, educational materials, and media articles on Jewish Multiculturalism. Tapestry reflects the evolution of this work, taking the developments of the past two decades well into the 21st century.
