Shadai performs religious Jewish music from the Middle East and North Africa. Featuring Iraqi-American Jewish vocalist Loolwa Khazzoom, the group offers a cappella shows, performances with traditional instrumentation (kanoun, oud, and dumbek), and recordings that serve up a hip hop, trance, and world beat mix.

Khazzoom has led Iraqi Jewish services for sabbath and holy days, has facilitated Middle Eastern and North African Jewish singing groups, and otherwise has performed Middle Eastern and North African Jewish music at venues across the globe -- including the World Music Festival and the Jewish Music Festival. In addition, her vocals have been recorded on several CDs and movie soundtracks including The Way Home and The Forgotten Refugees.

Shadai is named after the necklace that Khazzoom's great uncle, Amu Moshi, gave her as a little girl -- a gold hand with a turquoise stone in the middle. The shadai, also known as the hamsa, is a symbol of Divine protection.
